Commemorating 125 year of Dr Ida Rolf with Rebecca Carli-Mills

Describe how Ida’s words have inspired your work and life…

‘I was first introduced to Ida’s words as a graduate student in dance. I had not yet been Rolfed nor had I ever met a Rolfer, but I was inspired then and now, 37 years later I continue to be inspired, by the concept of gravity as central to human movement, experience and behaviour. Also, Dr Rolf talked about gravity being a source of healing. I would like to share with you my favourite Dr Rolf quote, ‘This is the gospel of Rolfing. When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through, then spontaneously the body heals itself’. In this quote, I hear a message of potential and hope. Thank you for my life’s work Dr Rolf’.

How does Ida’s work continue to be relevant in the 21st century?

‘I feel that Dr Rolf’s work is very relevant in the 21st century, in fact I feel that her work has not yet been fully realised. She put forth the idea that physical, emotional spiritual and energetic aspects of the human being are shaped by their relationship with gravity and that fascia is the medium through which we can influence that relationship. Now research is telling us about the sensory receptors in fascia and their connection with the autonomic nervous system, emotion, and self-awareness. Also, the correlates with pain, motor control and inflammation. I am pretty sure that Dr Rolf would be very pleased and also ready to roll up her sleeves’.
